There is much dissension about the exact length of time Social Media has existed. (A Brief History of Social Media, Social Network Sites: Definition, History, and Scholarship, The History and Evolution of Social Media, The History of Social Media [INFOGRAPHIC]). However, such is not the concern of this writing. Rather, this discussion will center on the tragic events of September 11, 2001, in relation to suggested corollaries of how Social Media has been shaped in the years ensuing, as well as how Social Media has evolved in that time; specifically, how these occurrences may have divulged into Social Media’s present paradigm.
At the time of the attacks on American landmarks on 9/11, personal interactions were being effected within the online community, though at that stage the scope of interactivity was limited to a more personal interest nature. Commercial concerns centered in the professional field of public relations and traditional marketing plans. Coextensively, international response to the cataclysm was unilateral in its support of the American people and in its condemnation of the tragedy, while here in the States, support from the public for the victims and their families was overwhelming and immediate. This led some investigators to suggest the episode causal of a change in the very fabric of the contemporary American commonwealth itself.
During the ensuing years, society became more social in nature, with the popularity of SNS rising to stratospheric heights and becoming ubiquitous worldwide. The acceptance of MySpace, and later Facebook, particularly here in the U.S., was overwhelming, while Friendster, Orkut, and Bebo enjoyed appeal in other countries. The adoption of commercial use by enterprise of these phenomena is well documented and universally accepted as well as assiduously understood.
Now, on the ten year anniversary of one of the greatest cataclysms ever to occur in modern history, Social Media has become integral to everyday life both here and abroad. As an example to underscore how much it has become ingrained in modern society, I hereby relate a personal experience – amongst graffiti in a public restroom, I recently viewed a URL to a YouTube video scrawled across the wall (to say that I was nonplussed would be an understatement of terms!).
It should not be inferred that these events are in any way related, nor is such being suggested. In point of fact, to say that these occurrences are any more than coincidental would be ludicrous. Nonetheless, it does give one pause to consider that the misfortunes afflicted by 9/11 and the resultant adversity experienced, as well as the willingness to embrace the sharing and attraction of Social Media in the last decade is, at the very least, an interesting synchronism.
This post is dedicated to the victims, survivors, heroes, and their families of the 9/11 catastrophe.
